USB vs. XLR Microphones: Which Should You Use for a Radio Show?
If you've already read about choosing a broadcast microphone, you've probably noticed that the same microphone often comes in two versions: one with a USB cable that plugs straight into a computer, and one with a three-pin XLR connector that needs an audio interface or mixer. The capsule inside may be identical. What you're really choosing is everything around the capsule.
What a USB microphone actually is
A USB microphone is a regular microphone with an analog-to-digital converter and a small preamp built into the body. Your computer sees it as a sound card. That's the whole trick — and it's a genuinely useful one. There is no interface to buy, no gain staging across multiple boxes, and almost nothing to misconfigure. For a solo internet radio host talking into one mic at a desk, a decent USB microphone removes an entire category of setup problems.
The limitations follow from the same design. Because the converter is inside the mic, you generally can't upgrade the preamp later, you can't run a long cable (USB runs are short; XLR runs can be very long), and mixing multiple USB mics on one computer ranges from awkward to impossible depending on your software. A USB mic is a closed system.
What XLR gets you
An XLR microphone outputs an analog signal and leaves the conversion to whatever you plug it into — an audio interface, a mixer, or a broadcast console. That separation is why radio stations use XLR everywhere:
- You can add mics. A two-person or four-person show just needs an interface or mixer with more inputs. The mics don't care.
- You can upgrade in pieces. Better preamp, better converter, same microphone — or the reverse.
- Cables are rugged and swappable. XLR cables lock in place, reject interference well over long runs, and cost little to replace when one dies mid-show.
- It works with broadcast gear. Processors, hybrids, and consoles all speak XLR.
The cost is complexity: you now own an interface, you set gain in two places, and you've added a box to your startup budget.
The honest decision
The question isn't which technology is better — XLR is more capable, full stop. The question is whether you'll ever use the capability.
- One host, one computer, talking or streaming from home: USB is a legitimate choice, not a compromise. NPR's training team makes a similar point in its guide to choosing microphones — the right mic is the one that fits how and where you actually record.
- Co-hosts, guests in the room, or any ambition to grow the setup: start with XLR. Rebuying your microphone because you added a second chair is the most common regret in home studios.
- Already own a mixer or interface: XLR, obviously — you've paid for the hard part.
One thing USB vs. XLR does not decide is the character of the sound. Buy USB if you want the shortest path from box to broadcast and you're sure the show stays a one-mic operation. Buy XLR if there's any chance the show grows, because everything else in radio is built around it.
