How Close Should You Be to the Microphone? Radio Mic Technique Basics
Buy the best broadcast microphone in the world and you can still sound thin, boomy, or like you're recording in a bathroom — because with microphones, where you are matters as much as what you bought. Mic technique is the free upgrade most beginners skip.
Why radio hosts get so close
Watch any radio studio and you'll see hosts speaking a few inches from the grille, sometimes close enough to almost touch it. Two reasons:
- Signal versus room. The closer you are, the louder your voice is relative to everything else — computer fans, traffic, the echo of your untreated room. Distance is the difference between "studio sound" and "recorded on a laptop across the desk."
- The proximity effect. Directional microphones (cardioid and its relatives) boost bass as you move closer. Shure's educational primer on microphone technique describes this proximity effect as a property of directional designs: up close, low frequencies rise, which is exactly the warm, full "radio voice" people associate with broadcasting.
So the classic close-mic position isn't a habit — it's a technique that trades room noise for voice, with a bass bonus.
Finding your distance
There's no single correct number, because it depends on your mic, your voice, and your room. A practical way to find yours:
- Start about a hand's width away — roughly the span from your outstretched thumb to your little finger. That's a common talking distance for dynamic broadcast mics.
- Move closer if your room is noisy or echoey, or your voice sounds thin. Expect more bass as you do.
- Back off if your voice sounds muddy or boomy, or every breath is audible. Condensers, being more sensitive, usually want a little more distance than dynamics — one of several practical differences we compare here.
Whatever distance you choose, keep it consistent. Drifting toward and away from the mic changes both loudness and tone from sentence to sentence, and no amount of editing fixes it cleanly.
Angle, plosives, and the pop filter
Speaking straight into the mic puts every p and b — plosives, little blasts of air — directly onto the capsule, producing that low thump. Two fixes, usually used together:
- Talk slightly off-axis. Aim your mouth just past the grille, or angle the mic a bit so air blasts miss the capsule while your voice still hits it.
- Use a pop filter or foam windscreen. It breaks up the air blast before it arrives. This is the cheapest accessory in broadcasting and the one with the most obvious effect.
Directional mics also reject sound from behind and beside them — that's the point of a cardioid pattern. Aim the back of the pattern at your noise source (the computer, the window) and the mic does some noise control for you.
Technique beats gear more often than you'd think
